Dr. Shanika Lavi Wilson is an academic and clinician specializing in mental health equity, advocating for social justice through innovative teaching and research at North Carolina Central University.

Dr. Shanika Lavi Wilson is a tenured Associate Professor and MSW Program Director at North Carolina Central University, bringing over 15 years of clinical practice experience and a decade in higher education. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Connecticut-Storrs, a Master of Science in Social Work focused on Mental Health and Substance Abuse from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Doctor of Social Work in Clinical Practice and Leadership from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Dr. Wilson's educational credentials are impressive. In June 2025 she will complete her Master of Science in Education in Global Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
As a licensed therapist and clinical supervisor, Dr. Wilson specializes in mental health equity, implicit bias, and racial trauma, particularly within African American communities. Her research focuses on utilizing generative AI to mitigate bias in diagnosing mental health symptoms among Black women. Known for her innovative curriculum development, she integrates technology into social work education through AI avatars and meaningful research projects.
Outside of academia, Dr. Wilson is a devoted wife and mother of three young men. She actively advocates for mental health equity, contributing to various professional organizations and community initiatives to promote social justice and anti-oppressive practices.
