Dr. Homayra Ziad is a community-engaged scholar of Islam and nationally recognized interfaith educator whose work advances religious pluralism, equity, and compassion.

Dr. Homayra Ziad is a community-engaged scholar and nationally recognized interfaith educator. She is Dean of Divinity and Director of the Hassan Institute for Interfaith Encounter at American Islamic College. After doctoral studies at Yale, Homayra was Assistant Professor at Trinity College (Hartford), Scholar of Islam at the Institute for Islamic, Christian and Jewish Studies (Baltimore), and Director of Islamic Studies at Johns Hopkins. While at Hopkins, she received the undergraduate teaching award, led a national faculty fellowship on community-engaged learning in Islamic Studies, partnered with American Muslim Health Professionals to mobilize students to address vaccine access in Muslim communities, and co-created Art, Religion and Cities with colleagues at Morgan State and the Walters Art Museum. She also served on the founding teams of 99 Clay Vessels, an arts and social justice project by and for Muslim women, and Healing Khayal, a music and healing residency for artists. For two decades, she has supported students, educators, activists, artists, and religious leaders in navigating pluralism and fostering networks of social change. She was founding co-chair of the American Academy of Religion’s Interreligious and Interfaith Studies Group and co-editor of Words to Live By: Sacred Sources for Interreligious Engagement. Homayra also served as Board President of the ACLU of Maryland.
