Robert M. Farley is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Chair of Philosophy, Religion, & Humanities at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. There he has the privilege of introducing an exceptionally broad range of students to the study of philosophy. He hopes they leave his classes with tools that will contribute to lifelong learning and questions that will keep them intellectually engaged long after they've completed their schooling.
Farley's research focuses on epistemology and moral philosophy—largely informed by the Common Sense tradition—and has appeared in Erkenntnis, Logos & Episteme, and the Southwest Philosophy Review. He also moonlights as a philosopher of logic. In collaboration with his friend Deke Gould (Augustana College), Farley has developed a virtue theoretic account of the normativity of logic, the most recent iteration of which was presented last summer, in Rome, at the 25th quinquennial World Congress of Philosophy.
Before moving south to avoid winter, Farley taught in the philosophy department at Northern Illinois University. This explains how a Floridian ended up as the immediate past president of the Illinois Philosophical Association. While attempting find a topic broad enough for his 2023 presidential address, he fell into a well and emerged with a new research interest centered on the value of philosophy and the concomitant question of how it contributes to human flourishing. He lives in Lakeland with his wife, Linette, and their daughters Matilda and Madeline.
