Riana Betzler is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at San José State University. Her teaching and research focuses on the philosophy and ethics of science. Her primary research project, “The Science and Ethics of Empathy,” investigates how data from neuroscience and psychology shape assumptions about the social, political, and moral value of empathy. More broadly, she is interested in questions that arise at the intersection of the human sciences and society. For example: What does it mean to have a science of the human? What should that science look like? How do the human sciences shape our perceptions of ourselves and others around us?
