Happiness

University of Arizona

Course Description:

This course analyzes the ways Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu traditions grapple with this fundamental question: What is happiness? We will examine how these traditions have considered the body, material pleasures, power, virtues, and relationships with divinities in their pursuit of happiness. By critically reading primary sources, engaging in class discussions, and participating in brief reflection activities, students will explore these perspectives in historical and contemporary contexts.
