Jeremy Smyczek is an assistant professor of English and directs the Composition Program at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, emphasizing writing as a means of inquiry and an ethical endeavor across academic disciplines. His current pedagogical efforts involve interrogating the role of traditional academic knowledge in the context of readily accessible information technologies. His scholarly work, which has appeared in Praxis, Journal for the History of Rhetoric, and the edited collection Recovering Overlooked Pragmatists in Communication, focuses on John Dewey's theories of lived experience fueled by aesthetic, civic, and scientific engagement as means to foster community and democratic participation. His current book project addresses often-implicit values regarding human experience in Western rhetorical, scientific, and religious traditions. All of his work emphasizes the themes of communication and community as essential elements of fully realized lives. He lives in Buffalo, NY, with his spouse and two dogs.
