Landscapes of Happiness: Rural Wisdom and Global Traditions on Living Well

University of Alberta, Augustana

Course Description:

When we think of “going to our happy place” we usually imagine it as an escape. What if we instead imagined the good life as “placed happiness?” How do our surroundings shape our understanding of happiness? This course examines the interrelationship between landscapes—both physical and cultural—and the pursuit of a meaningful life. From the practical knowledge of rural life rooted in intimate relationships with the land to traditions that guide ethical living and personal fulfillment throughout global networks, students will explore how ecologies and social contexts influence what it means to live well. This course invites students to cultivate a personal vision of happiness while gaining a broader appreciation for how people across time and place have understood and navigated the complexities of living a meaningful life. By engaging with diverse perspectives, students develop a deep understanding of and sense of connection to their textured lives, home communities, and the storied landscapes they inhabit.
